Measuring 45 Degree Angles to Make Picture Frames

Symmetry and complementary angles came together in one fun math lesson! After a symmetry lesson (putting blobs of paint on one half of a paper, right up to the middle crease, and then folding ), we used strips of Dollar Store foam board to create frames for the symmetry art. Armed with supplies, including a protractor and the info that they had to make the ends 45 degrees, students set to work. It was so interesting to watch them problem solve in order to create pieces that fit together just right. Some students made it work saying, “Good enough”. Others wanted their angles to fit perfectly and worked until it did.
